Hello! Little cutie
I am Comic Black Rainbow.
Regarding the coloring technique, many people find it difficult to apply impasto, because many people are painting realistic portraits and landscapes would use impasto techniques to paint.
People who like to draw anime, most of them probably use the cel-shading technique to color.
Because compared to impasto, cel shading feels simpler.
It is also more in line with the simplified form style of anime painting.
Therefore, many people who want to try to draw anime using impasto techniques will encounter the dilemma of not knowing how to start when they think about how to draw simple anime realistically...
But it doesn't matter! Today I will share with you what is the principle of impasto, how to paint, and how to express, and will also fully demonstrate all the steps of a simple impasto work.
Let you know the whole process of impasto~
After you finish reading this tutorial, you can open Clip studio paint
And picked up the brush and painted with impasto!

●The principle of impasto

From the perspective of traditional painting media, impasto is piling up paint layer by layer, so that the paint becomes thicker and thicker, which is called impasto. In terms of hand-painted media, if the paint is opaque, such as oil paint, acrylic, opaque watercolor, etc., you can use the impasto technique for painting. Also, because the colors are mostly stacked layer by layer, the general order of coloring is from dark to light, first paint the dark color, then the light color.

Because this kind of traditional impasto medium was mostly used to paint realistic works in the past, many people think that the expression of impasto belongs to the realistic style, but it is not the case. Although the media and techniques have their characteristics, in terms of painting style, the media and techniques are not the absolute factors that affect the style. So even if it is impasto, it is feasible for you to use this painting technique to paint works of various styles! I have seen artists of various styles use impasto to create works (pictured above), which can be clean, casual, realistic, or freehand. The appearance and style that impasto can show are mainly controlled by the artist himself, so impasto is not only used to create realistic works. You can still use impasto techniques to create your painting style!
●Sketching Relationships

When it comes to impasto, some people want to start teaching from realistic painting knowledge. For those who want to draw realistic style, sketching relationships is the most important painting knowledge for drawing realistic works. This must be very clear and very skilled to draw realistic works well. Therefore, regarding the relationship between light and shadow in the sketch, we can learn the details of these light and shadows from the picture above, and see the realistic light and shadow performance through the sphere. When we draw realistic works, we can draw according to these light and shadow performances.

At this point you might ask, what should I do if I don't consider drawing realistic works and want to draw simpler anime works? We can also refer to realistic sketch relationships, and then we just need to simplify the levels of these sketch relationships! For example, in realistic works, if the light and shadow relationship is very delicate, you can adjust it to the way of drawing shadows with cel shading, but just use the impasto technique to paint. Therefore, according to different painting styles, the artist can still decide the degree of delicateness of the sketch relationship by himself.

●Using Clip Studio Paint to create thick paintings

This time we will use Clip Studio Paint to create impasto works. The picture above shows the impasto tools of Clip Studio Paint, as well as the places for selecting colors and adjusting brush details. You can make adjustments in these tool bars according to your painting needs.
●Try starting your impasto journey with a simple style!
Because this tutorial is mainly to help you draw impasto easily and simply, I will also use the style of anime to draw the demonstration works, so that you don't need to worry about how superb your painting skills should be or how realistic the style should be, and it will feel easier to get started! If you feel that the picture-based teaching is not intuitive enough, you can also directly watch the YouTube video of this tutorial!
draft

Usually when drawing a draft, you don't have to worry about the drawing being sloppy and messy. You can draw a simple shape first, and then slowly draw out the overall appearance. What you should pay attention to at this stage is that if you are drawing a work with a more three-dimensional style, the structure should be drawn well, so that you will not find that light and shadow are difficult to draw when you use impasto techniques to color it later, and you will not be troubled by the process of constant modification. In addition, if you can draw the line drawing well in the draft stage, subsequent painting will be much easier!
Line Art

Generally speaking, when painting with the impasto technique, you don't need to be bound by the line drawing. Generally speaking, as long as the artist can use the impasto technique to draw the overall appearance, whether the work needs to add line drawings depends entirely on the artist's painting style and how the artist wants to express it. Therefore, if someone is already very experienced in impasto, they generally won't spend time on drawing clean line drawings. They will jump directly from the draft to the impasto stage.
Color Relationship

There is an advantage of painting with the impasto technique, which is that it forces you to pay attention to the overall picture before painting the details. The reason why many people paint some parts well but the whole picture is not good is mostly that they pay too much attention to details and ignore the overall painting process. But when impasto, we must first roughly draw the color, light, shadow, and overall feeling we want to paint. This way, we will not have to make many revisions and still not paint well when painting in detail later due to uncertainty beforehand.
Light and shadow relationship (this step may not be necessary depending on your painting style)

If the picture you want to draw is the kind without obvious light and shadow or ambient light, then the step of light and shadow relationship can be omitted. There's no fixed order for painting color relationships and light and shadow. As long as you can summarize the color, light and shadow of the whole picture at this stage, you can even draw and adjust them together! To demonstrate the more delicate process steps here, even the steps that can be omitted are demonstrated together! (Am I considerate?😆😆)
Detailed drawing → Completed

The left picture shows the impasto appearance without obvious ambient light and light and shadow relationship refinement, while the right picture shows the finished impasto appearance after the light and shadow relationship is relatively strong and refined. If you can draw well in the stage of color and light and shadow relationship, then you have completed 80% of it. Although in general, refinement is the most time-consuming, and refinement alone may take up 80% of the total time. But if the color and light and shadow relationship are well drawn, the detailed painting is just to organize the overall picture according to the color and light and shadow relationship, and there is no need to make any major changes and adjustments.
